My father brought me this 8x6mm opal from the Coober Pedy mines in Australia in the early 80's. I had it custom set in 14K gold.
The opal is very flashy; it's difficult to photograph opals.
Note: Any jewelry containing opals must be hand cleaned. The opal will be destroyed otherwise.
(I sure had small fingers back then!)

I think so, as it's not hollow. Probably best to ask a jeweler, and how much the resizing would cost.
