Leather Messenger Bag, Large Black Saddle Bag, Vintage 1980s

Here's a large, black messenger bag made of thick, full grained leather. It got me through my internship in the early 1990s. I bought it at a thrift shop, so it was used then. It's been in storage since the early 2000s and has weathered the neglect well. The large, front flap lifts to expose a snap closure pocket and an open pocket. There are three main sections, and the middle zippered section is not leather. The back is caved in around the edges, but it will expand again when filled up. The bottom of the back always had a little stub of a buckle hanging down and I never paid it any attention, but when cleaning the bag I found the second part of the strap...the part that would keep the bag buckled shut. It was never sewn to the top flap. The holes are present in the flap and the strap (looks like an hourglass, see pic 4) if you'd like to sew the strap on yourself. I just never needed it (see last pic). Outer measurements 12 x 16 x 7, shoulder straps are 48 inches total, when buckled at last hole, maybe 45 inches long--plenty of room for cross body wear. About 10x15 inches on the inside, maybe 9.5 x 14 in the inner zipped pocket, snap pocket is about 5x7 and the outer open pocket is about 8x8. I cleaned and polished it, but it's got wear...some folks pay extra for this "broken in" look!
