1896 WILLIAM HARRISON WALTER MONOGRAMED ENGLISH BEVELLED GLASS DRESSER JAR

Some version of this type of receptacle for makeup, jewelry, and whatnots has been around since our ancestors began molding clay into bowls. Some are made of china, others of crystal, metal, and, like this piece, zipper-cut glass. This particular piece dates back to the 19th century, to be used as storage on ones vanity area.
