Viola was forcibly removed from the theatre, jailed overnight, and convicted of tax evasion for not paying the one cent difference for the black seating in the balcony. Viola contested the court decisions and after the Nova Scotian court upheld the decision against her, Viola closed her beauty shop and eventually moved out of Canada. Viola's courageous protest was the first significant step in equal rights for all, and helped spark The Canadian Civil Rights Movement.
