Today, chambersticks are seen less often than candlesticks & are considered something of a collector’s item due to their small stature and unique history of use.
Intended to be small, they were utilized in one’s private chambers in order to have light. Because they were meant to be held and carried over short distances, they are sealed onto small trays at the base, which can catch any dropping wax, ashes, or spent matches. A lot of chambersticks were sold with an attached snuffer. This antique has a spike which once held the snuffer, long since gone. I spent a bit of time trying to locate another snuffer with no luck.
This opulent gold Beauty was hand-painted at an unknown point in time, likely at a “painting party” as the higher class women were restricted from complex tasks like Art, Literature, Politics- go figure 😆! Unsure when it was painted, the underside is somewhat messy but flip her back over and she’s Pristine! No chips cracks crazing or dings, amazing for an old relic like this. The lovely intricate linen underneath is an antique from Europe, compliments of @Extra_ish 👈
