Mottahedeh American Coat of Arms Porcelain Serving Dish for Department of State. Rare and Vintage.
Size: 8 3/4 x 8 1/4
A Chinese Export stylet porcelain serving dish by Mottahedeh & Co. of New York, designed for the Diplomatic Reception Rooms for the United States of America’s Department of State. The dish has a quatrefoil form featuring a depiction of the United States coat of arms in the center, modeled after a Chinese-inspired design. The coat of arms shows an American bald eagle with wings spread, holding thirteen arrows in the left talon and an olive branch in the right talon, as well as a banner held in its beak reading in Latin, ‘E Pluribus Unum, which translates to ‘Out of many, one.’ The edges and rim of the plate feature blue zigzag borders and a scalloped band. The underside reads, ‘Specially Designed for the Diplomatic Reception Rooms, Department of State, From Chinese Export Made for the American Market, C.1810, Mottahedeh’.
