Dad always loved to tell the story of when he Grandpa and two of my uncles went West on old route 66. It was the depression with its dust bowl and years of drought. Four straight years of crop failure drove the men folk west in the old model T Turing car. Well one of dad's favorite stories had to do with the cost of gas and tires after you got out into the desert. Seems they had a bad tire and were low on gas and in the middle of New Mexico. It was pretty late at night but they did find a gas station...... miles from anywhere. Of course it was closed, but there was a light in the living quarters. Rousing the attendant, dad was told that gas was $2 a gallon and the worn out old tires were $20 each. Well dad said that he could keep his old gas and his old tires as he walked back to the car to rejoin my uncles and grandfather. After talking it over with them for some time he had to go back to the station with his tail tucked between his legs
