Gourevitch interviewed survivors of the Rwandan genocide (in 98' I believe) which occurred between April to June of 94' when 3/4 of the Tutsi population was murdered in a span of 100 days. I read varying accounts on numbers but between Tutsi & Hutu "moderates" figures seem to be around a million murdered. The "figure" of this genocide is horrific enough in itself, but the fact the murders were committed by people they knew in the community compounds the devastation (which was encouraged by propaganda on the radio, for example, which villified the Tutsis, )
US didn't intervene despite the fact Genocide Convention met in '48 to prevent & punish genocide (the book doesn't get into this...) I could go off on my *theory* why this is but I'll refrain for now.
Gourevitch does provide background...but it is important to note the history of the region with Hutu/Tutus is long & complex (at least to me, I'm still reading on it & trying to understand it all).
Gourevitch did a really nice job of presenting survivors stories' for the reader. Highly recommend as it presents a part of history that we seem to forget & should be spoken more about publicly.
