19th century Chinese Oxblood Sang de Boeuf glaze vase. Hand thrown pottery dating from 1890-1920. Beautiful example of hand applied glaze in the Sang de Boeuf application in colors of deep Oxblood red, black and deep green. This glaze technique requires a high degree of skill to acquire these glaze colors without the use of modern technology. With a Sang de Boeuf glaze the most important factors are the coloration and the shape of the vase. This is an unusual shaped vase and has an exemplary glaze. It is just stunning when you see it. This flambé glaze immediately moves this piece into the upper tier of flambé glaze vases of this era. The word Sang de Boeuf means “Oxblood “. This glazing technique was put into use in China in the 11th century. It’s effect is achieved by using copper oxide as a coloring agent and firing the object in a reducing atmosphere using no modern technology. Please note, these vases produced in the 19th century often have a rougher bottom rim, kiln speckling, minor firing imperfections and some uneven glaze. These are all properties of an antique flambé vase or glaze ware. After the passing of the stamp act in the U.S. was passed in 1862 it was required that a vase for export be stamped “China”. This vase is from approximately 1890. It is very fine quality with an excellent glaze.purchased from a high end antique dealer. No chips, cracks or damage. A true antique at a very reasonable price.
