Your Blues Aren't Like Mine, Campbell

Awarded by the NAACP for best literary work, this timeless piece fictionalizes the 1955 murder of Emmitt Till, a Chicago-born 14 year old African-American young man who was lynched for "flirting" with a white woman in Mississippi. In Campbell's work, she follows the characters over three decades and the ramifications of "violating" the Jim Crow laws of the South. Campbell's writing is intense, passionate & thought-provoking. Although written in 92' & Campbell died all too soon in '06 this work is very much relevant today. The murder of 17-year old Trayvon Martin has striking similarities to Emmitt Till, particular the "fate" of the perpetrators; Roy Bryant & George Zimmerman. Perhaps this is too much editorializing/opinion but this isn't the problem in contemporary society; it's apathy. In terms of the condition of the book, there are a few passages I highlighted (bc they were disturbing) but book is in vguc. There isn't much highlighted other than the photos posted. I highly recommended 👌 this intense & rich work by Campbell.
