After thorough preheating them the knife goes into a fire to be heated between 1800°F-1850°F and hold the Knife piece at the hardening temperature until it is completely and uniformly heated. D2 is an air hardening Steel and will develop hardness on cooling in still air. D2 has an element of wear-resistance that gives it an edge.
