This pair of “Made in Japan” figurines shows a high quality level in both design and execution.
Started right after World War II and prolonged into the early 1960s, Japanese porcelain figurines are popular collectibles.
This Japanese production tends to focus on the depiction of European courtiers from the 1700s, very much in the style of renowned Meissen, Germany porcelain figurines.
Here, with this lovely musical couple, we get high quality in design, painting and glaze. It’s particularly visible with the treatment of faces: subtle complexion nuances, very precise and skillful painting of mouth, eyes, eyelids and eyebrows (one can distinguish the irises from the black pupil) and beautiful high-gloss glaze make for a result that is very satisfying, even in the least forgiving up-close pictures. It’s not Meissen quality yet, but we are getting close!
Poses are interesting and natural, colors vivid and varied, different types of glaze (mat, satin and gloss) offer a rich range of textures, while details suggestive of embroideries or prints on the figures’ garments demonstrate impeccable craftsmanship.
In conclusion, this beautiful pair clearly stands out from the average, and offers a level of quality in both design and execution that is worthy of its Meissen model—for a tiny fraction of the price!
Excellent vintage condition (no chip or scratch).
