Western Germany was founded in 1949 and in 1956 Alois Zöller and Werner Born founded their family company 'Zöller and Born'. Taking into consideration these marking and the design and smooth sand-like texture of the pewter lid this item is dated to the early-1960's. It features the engraved words 'Jagers' and 'Abschied'. These words roughly translate to 'Jagers farewell'. Jagers is a commonly used title for infantry soldiers in the German military. In modern German military, Jäger is also used as a commonly known term for light infantry, that is specialized for assault and defence operations in rugged terrain. Jager, in its original sense of light infantry, is usually translated into English as 'Rifleman' (in an infantry role) or 'Rifles' (in regimental names). Jager can also translate to 'Hunter' in English.
This item is in very good vintage condition for its age. A very heartwarming designed piece. The stein's lid opens smoothly and every so slightly wobbles from side to side if you push it in that direction. It has no visible chips. A truly lovely piece of Western German stein and military history. Please examine all photos provided as they are part of the description.
