Ms. Emma Designs may have permanently closed their doors in 2015, but founder Sofia Verna still makes gorgeous custom clothing out of her current digs in Italy, and you can still order pieces online. I remember the heyday of Ms Emma in Toronto, though, where every boutique was a beautifully appointed space filled with the most lavish and opulent fabrics sourced from all over the world. This particular piece is one of those timeless fashion staples - a slinky black velvet maxi dress is appropriate for any number of formal occasions and can easily be accessorized in a wide variety of ways. There are no content labels in this because (a) this is bespoke, custom tailoring, and (b) they would mess up the lines of your clothes. None of my Ms Emma items have content labels. What they all do have is fabulous fabric - this deluxe velvet jersey is no exception. It's heavy and has a slinky drape, and it feels wonderful on - stretchy and breathable. There are modest side slits, a deeply scooped neckline, and the fit is body skimming and flattering. Since I'm not sure of the actual fabric content (there could be silk, there could be viscose or modal), I suggest dry-cleaning or hand-washing & air drying (I've done this) to be safe. Size isn't marked; measurements below suggest size XL, and the fabric is comfortably stretchy. It's been worn a handful of times, gently, and there's no visible wear or damage.
