The Art of Asking Questions by Stanley L. Payne
Hardcover with dust jacket, Princeton University Press, 1973, 10th printing (actually from 1973, not a reprint from contemporary Princeton Legacy Library)
Pre-owned. Smells musty. DJ: Moderate wear to dust jacket including small edge tears, chipping, creases, & scuffing. Significant discoloration & stains, but dj spine is legible. Book: Moderate wear to covers, spine, & pgs. Boards aren't warped, but have some edge wear (fraying), some small discoloration, & corner bumping. No fading to boards. Top & bottom of spine are slightly soft. Spine isn't visibly separating from pages, but the spine creaks when opening like the page edges are bumping against it. All pages are attached & page faces are clean. Minor amount of pencil underlining on about 5 - 10 pages. Page edges are tanned & dirty. Some writing inside front cover. Please see photos.
"While the statisticians are trying to knock a few tenths off the statistical error, says Mr. Payne, errors of tens of percents occur because of bad question wording. Mr. Payne's shrewd critique of the problems of asking questions reveals much about the nature of language and words, and a good deal about the public who must answer the poller's questions. For public opinion pollers, census takers, advertising copywriters, and survey makers of all kinds this book will be a tool for the achievement of more reliable results."
