VTG PUZZLE STEIN

A vintage puzzle stein made in Germany of a stoneware with a fluted body and sculpted leaves outlined in gold. The beautiful hand painted graphics are scenic nature of fowl and a treed landscape. The handle and rim mimics a tree branch. These were found in taverns as early as the 17th century and were a jug shape; the revery was found in men attempting to drink without spilling however if you didn't know the secret it would spill. There are holes found at the rim and 2 rows at the top. It measures 4.5" in diameter at the base and is 7" in height. The prize was found at the bottom after drinking the contents; a "Lithophane Picture" appears of a nude. Lithophanes are accomplished through different thicknesses of the moulded clay. A beautiful collectible stein in excellent condition and wonderful addition to your bar to stump your friends and family!
