This is an amazing designer Phil Strann collectible vintage platter hat from the 1950s'. The hat is made of a stiff material lined with straw and fabric: The top of the platter is made of a rather unique gold tone straw. The bottom of the platter is lined in a black fabric. There is a cap inside the hat to keep it in place. The outside of the cap is lined with the same black fabric, but the inside of the cap is lined with a shiny silver colored, patterned fabric as shown. There is a stunning veil attached to the front and sides, ending in two small black fabric bows. The veil has a few tears, but it is too beautiful to remove, and does not really detract from its beauty.
Throughout the 1950s, ladies wore hats daily as a part of their attire as was a pair of gloves. Post war 1940’s and 1950’s saw many women choosing not to wear hats on a regular basis. To preserve its market, the millinery industry set about creating variety and extravagance. Generally speaking hats remained small and close to the head. They were now touted as the essential accessory to complete the ensemble. Alternatively, ‘pancake’, ‘mushroom’ or ‘cart wheel’ hats sat flat atop the head reviving turn of the century styles.
