Rare! Large Glazed Ceramic Wall Plate by acclaimed Mid Century modernist art potter, Susana Espinosa. Signed and dated, 1979.
Espinosa is known for her surrealist abstract figural images and impeccable technique. By hand carving before firing, her work has a multi-dimensional appearance.
This glazed redware plate is an unusually large example at 11” H x 11” W x 1.5” D. The deep blue sky and/or ocean, and aqua and teal in the border (see photo 5), pair beautifully with her typical minimalist hues. Affixed with a hook and ready for display or wall hanging.
CONDITION: Excellent. Photo 7 highlights two very minor scratches, and an area along top edge where redware peeks through ever so slightly. No damage observed. The rounded square-shaped plate is slightly “out of the round / square”. As with any handmade creation, one should expect to find variations (shape, texture, finish) vs uniform machine made ones.
Artist's Biography: Sculptor, ceramicist and painter, Susana Espinosa (1933 - 2022), was trained as a painter in Buenos Aires before settling in Puerto Rico. Ceramics gave her a bidemensional surface to explore her pictorial language; she later transitioned to three-dimensional pieces. Her work has been internationally recognized and presented by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Latin American Art, among others.
