I was a storyboard artist and writer on Steven Universe. This is some concept sketching I did for the episode "So Many Birthdays". "1916" by Motorhead is a devastating song about young men dying in war.  (Ah Motorhead and Steven Universe an unlikely combination.) I wrote these lyrics down in my sketchbook as a reminder of what I found most inspiring about the song. I listened to it nonstop while working on the end, where the gems become angry with themselves that they can't save Steven. During the finale, I played the gems reaction as 'clinging to one another like children" like the soldiers in the song. because they ARE soldiers. They lost their commander & their mother--the same person. Now, watching Steven die is like watching Rose "Die". They want to call out for their mother to save them, but she can't.
