Adorable rare vintage Woman Pins by Lucinda. I've been collecting these pieces of art for years, ever since I heard of Lucinda Yates and her inspiring story. After surviving a year and a half of homelessness, in 1988 Lucinda Yates moved back to Portland and started putting her life back together by waitressing. But her breakthrough came in 1988 when she noticed some colorful mat boards in a trash can behind a frame shop. She took the boards, cut them into various geometric shapes, fashioning her first piece into a tiny house. That was the beginning of her illustrious career as a jewelry designer. Initially, she sold the pins for $6 to raise funds for the omeless shelter. In a short time, her enterprise grew into a thriving business. Her collections include House Pins, Tree Pins, Little People Pins, and Women Pins. I have collected the Women Pins. This is one of her first in the collection, featuring two women, one sitting with a flowered hat, the other standing. The colors are primarily green and pink. To me, it is nearly inconceivable how one can create something so intricate and tiny, using colored mat board and acrylic. I'm hoping to increase interest in her work so that others might start collections of their own. Her business ceased to exist in 2014 when Lucinda retired.
