Hand Painted Gilded Square Serving Dish This is an antique serving dish, decorated with beautiful flowers and a large butterfly!
Made by the Morimura Brothers in Japan (Nippon) during the 1910s, this hand painted porcelain bowl has an unusual squared off design. The corners are slightly rounded, as are the two handles. One large illustration covers the cream colored interior of the bowl. A gorgeous butterfly, patterned with light purple, orange and green, visits clusters of peonies, colored in blues and pinks. The design is bordered with a black band, decorated with more peonies, in various blues. The rim and handles have been generously finished with gold gilt, and many small details have been highlighted in gold as well. A single thin gold band adorns the foot of the bowl.
The bottom displays the "M" Wreath stamp, used by the Morimura Brothers between 1911 and 1921, and reads "Hand Painted Nippon".
Condition: This bowl is in very good shape for it's age! There is a small chip and hairline crack under one of the handles, as shown in the last 2 photos, but the design is bright and unscratched. There is a bit of paint smudging left over from manufacturing, an extremely common and minor issue in these hand painted pieces.
Size: The dish measures just under 7” across, is just over 8” across the handles, and sits about 2” tall.
