Antique Silver Plate on Wood Plaque — a Rare Art Nouveau Collectible. Artist signed “Ruffony” on lower right. Made in France. Late 19th Century.
The sculptural repousse (raised relief metalwork) design depicts the Apparitions of Lourdes: Virgin Mary (Our Lady of Lourdes) stands praying with Saint Bernadette kneeling by her side (in 1858, it said that the Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette—then a young shepherdess). The highly detailed plaque also shows Sanctuaires Notre-Dame de Lourdes, a major pilgrimage site. Printed around her head: Jesus Immaculate Conception. They are flanked by beautiful Art Nouveau flowers, an exquisitely ruffled shroud and a border with Fleur de Lis at the top. The solid wood backing mirrors the cathedral window shape and has a metal easel for adjustable display. At one time, it also held a music box mechanism.
SIZE: Measures about 13.5” tall by 9” wide.
