This is from the very rare first printing, not a later mass-produced reproduction. This particular etching is extremely rare and seldom appears on the market.
This Artist Proof is unlike those Numbered Limited Edition Etchings as this Artist Proof (E.A.) is also pencil provided on etching by Artist, Salvador Dali by his own hand (E.A.).
The "E A" (for "epreuve d' artiste," or artist proof) in the left margin; Dali himself was there when this lithograph was made and that he personally approved the quality and content of this particular image. The first approved, by artist, printing of any subsequent image. These prints are usually kept by the artist as a record of the print's progression, but can also be released to market.
Salvador Dalis' influence and inspiration was the renowned 17th century Dutch Old Master painter, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. Our etching titled "Boy" was drawn after Rembrandts' "Portrait of a Boy" circa 1655-1660, which is not for sale and is currently displayed in the Norton Simon Museum of Art in Pasadena, CA. (seen above).
