This vintage fall/winter coat reflects the 1950’s era of boxy, big buttons, and twill wool. Woman of this era found this style of coat practical for maternity during the baby boom. Coat has a double hidden button collar and shorter bell sleeves of the time. This coat has the Chicago clothing maker Paul R. Nissen tag. Nissen started making clothes in Chicago around 1941. The coat went through a restoration to remove cigarette smell and dry cleaner chemicals that cause a dark yellow discoloration and makes the wool stiff. Using natural cleaners, the coat was restored by using multiple soak and an air drying method. It no longer has a strong smell, the fabric is soft and natural feeling. Photos indicate some light fabric discoloration near the collar, and 2 tiny holes are seen on the left side pocket. The discoloration is not heavy or noticeable when wearing.
I believe modern size 6- 8 can wear this coat depending on how boxy of a look you like. I wear a woman’s USA 10 and I can button and wear the coat, I don’t think it will fit a size 12.
Measurements are in the photos: pit to pit 20-1/2 inches. Front of collar to hem 37 inches. Shoulder to arm length 16 inches. Rough shoulder to shoulder on the bust is approximately 16 inches.
