This is an antique hand crocheted lace gown from 1908. I purchased this from the daughter of the original owner, who stated that her mother wore it as her confirmation gown.
The tiered dress is created of a hand crocheted ivory "spider" lace. Ñandutí is a traditional Paraguayan embroidered lace, introduced by the Spaniards, that is related to Teneriffe lace. The name means "spider web" in Guaraní.
The bodice is cut high along the neckline & back. The lace is crocheted into sharp points to give almost a fringed effect around the neckline. The bodice & back are cut generously & pleated at the waistline & collar. The dress is fully lined w/ a sheer netted fabric. The inside of the waistline has a thick muslin band that closes at the back with hook & eyes.
The skirt has three tiers of lace & is cut straight with just a hint of an A line. The scalloped hem of the netted lining has and extra ruffled layer to add some volume.
The scallop edge sleeves are unlined.
10 hooks & eyes closures that run along the back of the dress.
{Condition}
The delicate dress is in fantastic antique condition. There is one faint stain on the sleeve of the left arm, one small break in the lace at the waistline, and one small break in the lace near a hook and eye closure along the back. None of these are noticeable & could be mended professionally.
