History from British Museum - This tea kettle won V. Lorenzo Porcelli the prize for product design excellence at the Industrial Designers Society of America Conference in August 1986. At that time he is quoted as having said, "The only reason for doing another anything is to make it better or advance the state of the art. We took on the redesign of this familiar object on that basis. The kettle has great visual clarity and as such explains itself and how the various elements work. It functions better than it ever did before. It is easier getting the water in and getting the water out. We use fewer parts. The action of the water opening it by itself eliminated a knob and welded spout." He also stated that although the inspiration took five minutes, it took only five years to get it to the market. The original packaging explained the design of this kettle as follows:
"The unconventional spout creates an arched ribbon of water when pouring. The lid, weighted and counter-balanced, is activated by the impact of water from the faucet. Sophisticated simplicity in polished stainless; boiling water beautifully in a useful piece of art." It originally retailed for $59.95.
