In 1925 Doll Maker, Yoichi Kojima was awarded the gold prize in the Paris world's exposition. That was the beginning of the Hakata Dolls worldwide fame. They are now exported to many countries around the world.
The difference between the Hakata doll and famous dolls such as Lladro, Hummel or Meisen is the material they are made from. Hakata is distinguished as a clay doll and the others are porcelain dolls. The finish of porcelain is a sharp glassy finish, while Hakata is more of a folk art that is soft, natural and unglazed. Lladro, Meissen and Hummel are fired for glazing after they have been painted. The Hakata Doll is not fired after painting. It is kept natural.
