Balancing function and fantasy, the great designers of the twentieth century have created some of the most beautiful shoes ever made. The Metropolitan Museum's carefully detailed shoe ornaments capture the character and grace of actual shoes in the collection of the Museum's Costume Institute. The Museum's Red Lace Shoe Ornament is based on an original pair of red silk evening shoes from 1992. These dazzling shoes are over-embroidered with red sequins; the uppers feature floral-patterned cutwork backed with stiff red mesh. The ornament is hand-painted cast resin.
