"In a series of observations and meditations on the writing process, this book examines the benefits of writing slowly. This book includes inspirational anecdotes from classic and contemporary writers, and DeSalvo encourages writers to explore the complexities of craft by getting to know one’s stories and oneself more fully over time. It's important to "cultivate empathy for ourselves because being a writer isn’t easy," writes DeSalvo. “Slow writing is a way to resist the dehumanization inherent in a world that values speed. It’s one way to find—or return to—our authentic selves.""
I wasn't raised in a storytelling household, so as an adult I became a "beginning" writer and would get very stressed when I wasn't "producing" enough work; it turned out I really needed to get to know myself and figure out what the heck I wanted to say. This was a good book for helping me negotiate that process but now this copy needs to stop languishing on my bookshelf and help out somebody else. 💖
