Chest Carved Camphor box
This is a tourist item picked up in the 1980’s. It is a replica of the 18 and 19th century camphor chests.
I believe the box is made of camphor wood due to its scent. Think a mild Vicks value rub. The wood is famous for keeping bugs away. The Chinese version of cedar I suppose.
The box is carved on 4 sides with Traditional embellishments such as the flowers and leaves. There is a lady and her servants and mountain scenery. The inside is lined with red material. Feels like cotton. The lining is in great shape with only bits of black colouring I think due to the glue used to secure it.
While a beautiful box, the quality is not of the ilk of the original camphor chests (which are worth many 1000$ and much larger. It still is very neat! And great for storage of those special items.
Great Vintage Condition - there are a few nicks in the wood, some red spots (may have part of the Manufacture? Near brass plate, I see a small rub. You will see some glue and lacquer seepage. Something that is expected with age. I tried to capture a few of these imperfections in my pictures. And ask any questions.
