Paperback, 1960. Great vintage condition. Minor cosmetic wear and some yellowing consistent with the age of the book. There are also a couple of dog-ears and a previous owner wrote their name in the front (see pics for flaws). Otherwise a solid copy--the pages and spine are clean and intact.
Born in 1878, Carl Sandburg may be one of the most interesting people you've never heard of. As a journalist, political activist, and "radical socialist" he advocated for better treatment of the working class, better health conditions, and safety measures in the workplace. He was anti-capitalist and anti-big-business. He wanted to eliminate the graft and vice that was corrupting the government. He fought for stricter child labor laws and won 3 Pulitzer prizes. He supported the Civil Rights Movement and was the first white man to be honored by the NAACP with their Silver Plaque Award. He worked as a barbershop porter, a milk truck driver, a brickyard hand, and a harvester in the Kansas wheat fields. The poems in this book were written between 1910-1960, by a guy who lived a hell of a life!
