This plate, entitled 'Touch', is one of a set of five issued by the Museum of Oriental Antiquities in Taipei, Taiwan circa 1979. It depicts one of the five perceptions of Weo Cho. This one is the sense of touch. The artwork is in the tradition of Chu Yuan-Chang of the Ming Dynasty.
Faux-Cinnabar, made of red plastic, is often sold as the real thing but a simple test will determine if a piece is genuine or not. Some nail polish remover, placed on a cotton swab, is rubbed on an inconspicuous part of the object. If it turns the swab red it is genuine but if it is plastic the swab remains white.
This turned the swab red when I rubbed it on a red spot near the hanger on the back. Cinnabar is made by applying layer after layer of the red lacquer on another surface, almost always metal. Once sufficient layers have been applied and dried the artist can then carve designs into it. Fakes are just made of plastic in a mold. The enclosed paperwork certifies its authenticity.
This beautiful piece is 9.5 inches in diameter and 1.25 inches deep. It has a hanger on the reverse but can also be displayed on the black stand included.
