Pair of Two Antique Chinese Nesting Rice Measures / Dou Baskets, circa late 19th to very early 20th C. A Must Have for collectors of Asian Art, folk art, primitive farmhouse or agricultural artifacts.
These rustic, square wooden crates have the most gorgeous, authentic wear: an aesthetic that comes only through a century of aging. Each is constructed with dovetail joinery, and still retain its original lacquer paint—a rich, mustardy yellow and a deep, dark red.
Rice Measures or “dou” baskets were traditionally used for carrying harvested rice and other grains from fields (or “paddies”), predominantly in the Shanxi province in North China. They are made of Elm or Pine wood with tongue and groove joinery or similar construction, and iron fasteners for bracing. Each one is handmade and unique!
Ideal both for display or use: fill with other collected pieces, use as planters or simply exhibit as objet d’art.
Large one measures about 8” wide the rim / 5 3/4” W at the base and about 5” tall
Smaller one measures 6 1/8” wide at the rim / ~ 4” W at the base and about 4” tall
Condition is rustic and aged with chipping paint — as seen in photos. Please feel free to ask questions.
