A rare and charming vintage pair of Japanese Kimekomi rabbit dolls, depicted preparing mochi (rice cake) in a traditional setting. Purchased in 1999 for the Year of the Rabbit, this set is a beautiful nod to Japanese culture and folklore.
Kimekomi dolls are traditional Japanese figures made by carving grooves into wood or molded bases and tucking in fabric. These rabbits wear colorful, intricate fabrics and feature red eyes and red headbands—classic stylistic touches.
One rabbit holds a mallet, mid-motion, while the other is ready at the mortar. The scene is a sweet representation of the Tsukimi (moon-viewing) tradition and the moon rabbit folktale, where a rabbit is said to be making mochi on the moon.
• Rabbits approx. 5.25” tall x 3” wide/deep
• Mortar approx. 2.25” tall x 1.75” diameter
• Set includes two rabbits, mortar, and mallet
• Very good vintage condition; visible yellowing and stains on the white fabric that resemble natural fur shading—adds to the character and age of the piece. Please see close up pics.
Perfect for collectors of Japanese folk art, rabbit-themed decor, or Year of the Rabbit memorabilia.
