This is a limited edition copy of "The Autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini" signed by the illustrator Salvador Dali. It is numbered 50 out of 1000 copies. The book is hardcover. It was published by Doubleday & Company, Inc in Garden City, N.Y in 1946. The book is written in English and is illustrated by Salvador Dali. It is considered a biography and autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini.
The decline in colored plate quality within a limited Doubleday series from 1955, even though they were purportedly printed the same year, likely stems from several factors related to printing processes and paper quality. These factors can include variations in ink consistency, paper absorption rates, and the wear and tear on printing plates themselves.
Plates are fresher being copy 50.
WHY COLORED PLATES ARE RICHER AND SHARPER FOR THE FIRST 100 of 1000 BOOKS PRINTED IN A LIMITED SERIES:
The below explanation goes into great detail regarding the process of inserting colored plates into a limited series of books printed between 1940 and 1956.

Hello! What condition is the book in?

@hnlxx Sorry about that! I should have written it. I have an INSANE amount of books. I have 2 or 3 signed by Dali.
This book is in good condition. There is slight fading on the cover. The design on the front and spine is done in gold gilded stamping. Rag paper pages. Expected natural oxidation for a book published in 1947. For the purposes of this listing, will state that the book is "as is "in the case that a mark is found on a page or the cover, or any other part of the book.

@hnlxx My great great aunt designed the covers, spines, selected typography, did edits and selected plates for Doubleday and other major publishers from roughly 1890's-1960's. Her name was Alma Reese. So I inherited her entire archive. I have books with hand painted covers and hand written spines never released to the public. I don't have all of my books individually listed on this platform, but there are roughly 200.

@hnlxx I have another book signed by Dali too. I also have “one way ticket” by Langston Hughes with a letter written and signed from Langston Hughes to my great great aunt saying thank you on the first page in addition to a signature from illustrator. I also have two William Saroyan editorial drafts with hand painted covers and spines my aunt designed that have never been seen by the public. Let me know if you’re interested.
