This bag was taken from the famous William Hogarth painting, A Rake’s Progress. It’s a satirical depiction of the rise and fall of one Tom Rake, a country boy who inherited a fortune, gambled it and squandered it away in debauched evenings in the renowned Rose Tavern in Covent Garden. His reckless spending and gambling lead to financial ruin, ultimately resulting in his incarceration in the Fleet Prison, and lastly dying of madness in the notorious Bedlam Asylum.
