Vintage Gold Toned and Crystal Necklace

This one has me perplexed if anyone can fill me in? It’s an absolutely stunning decorative gold chain with beautiful crystals but not sure why it has such a long extension on the pendant clasp at the bottom? I would either put a giant cross on it or hook it back around to the necklace. Do tell?
