Vintage 1940, First Edition?
"For Whom The Bell Tolls"
By Ernest Hemingway
FIRST EDITION??
According to "A Pocket Guide to the identification of first Editions" 6th revised edition compiled by Bill McBride...
The date, 1940 on the title page and the date, 1940 on the copyright page should be the same with no other numbers or letters listed. That would make this book a first edition. This book has no other designating letter or number on the copyright page.
Also, most first editions would have the letter "A" on the copyright page. This book does not have any number or letter on the copyright page. Yet, the date on the copyright page is the same, 1940, as the title page, indicating a first edition. You Decide.

I wanted to tell you that that apis a first edition without jacket but still very rare. With jacket it usually sells for about 1900. Dollars. You may want to put this also up on other rare book sights. Good luck. I know I have rare boooks and usually sell to dealers.
