Levi Strauss, the founder of the famous blue jeans company, was born into a Jewish family in Bavaria, Germany, in 1829. He immigrated to the United States in the mid-1840s with his family to escape anti-Semitic restrictions in Europe. After establishing a successful dry-goods business in San Francisco, he partnered with Jacob Davis to patent the riveted work pants that became the iconic Levi's blue jeans.
Strauss was an active member of the Jewish community and a prominent philanthropist in San Francisco. He supported various civic and cultural institutions, including the Pacific Hebrew Orphan Asylum and Home, Temple Emanu-El, and the Hebrew Board of Relief.
