The plant grows tall, exceeding ten feet with leaves spreading over three feet. The flower emerges on a separate stem, sometimes standing five feet tall. Pinks are gorgeous but are not as common as the red. The name ʻawapuhi koʻokoʻo describes its physical appearance: ginger on a pole. It is often called “torch ginger” and comes from Netherlands East Indies.
