There is some finish wear as shown, patina, scratches/etc. This is more of a dull finish, not shiny. If you want it shiny, wonder if you could polish? Love it just like it is. On the very back, the thin rear panel is made of a lighter gold tone material, tin? Metal? There is a green old dried substance on it, old glue? No idea. It doesn’t seem to serve any purpose, and it cannot be seen on the inside. There may have been a little flip lid at the very top, no longer present. The entire top flips up and down, so you can remove postal mail pieces. (Smaller slot at the top to slip in pieces of mail without having to open the lid.) Have found several of these. Some are thin & tinny shiny brass, others misc metals. This is heavy at around 3.5lbs. Our magnet only sticks to some components, others barely at all.
