Heavily hand-embroidered and mirror-studded Central Asian man’s quilted cotton vest, likely Afghan / Northwest Pakistan tribal work, preserved as a carefully created antique textile in fragile, study-only condition. Can not be worn.
~ 46" chest / 39" hips / 40" bottom diameter / 24" length
~ Dense folk embroidery in cotton threads over moss-green and dark brown cotton base panels, including florals, rosettes and wheel motifs
~ Shisha mirror work set into many of the motifs, plus seed stitching and couching in multiple colors
~ Likely Afghan, Kuchi, Baloch or Northwest Indian / Pakistani (Kutch / Sindh) folk embroidery
~ Quilted cotton lining in tan / beige, now stained and darkened with age, very thin and worn
~ Multiple rips and holes in embroidery work and applique pieces
~ No closure, front panels designed to overlap
~ Front edges, armholes and hem finished with printed cotton binding
~ Completely hand-worked; irregularities and asymmetry consistent with village / tribal work
Poor condition and absolutely beautiful - Losses and breaks to threads throughout; some mirrors missing, cracked or dulled; sequins and metallic trims are tarnished and bent with age.
