RARE Vintage (pre-1950s) Carved Ivory Earrings Hannya Masks -EXCEPTIONAL

These Genuine Pre-Ban Elephant Ivory earrings are Just Exceptional!! In EXCELLENT CONDITION. Hand-Carved in Japan in the 1950's or earlier. Distinct Ivory Graining is visible. Original screw-back backings. These vintage earrings measure 3/4" Long 1/2" Wide and approx 1/2" Thick. The box is not original to these earrings, it is just a box I have to store them in. The Hannya mask is the vengeful and jealous woman turned demon. Pointed horns, glaring eyes and teeth, and the expression all exhibit the full wrath, anger and resentment of her nature. Even to this day a hand gesture of two index fingers sticking up from a man's forehead is a sign of that a wife is mad at him or jealous. The coloring of the face signifies the degree of demons anger. For Example, the more reddish color indicates strong resentment and anger and is used in such plays as Dodoji was a paler color would be more appropriated for Aoi-no-ue. Dodoji is the story of unrequited love between a woman and a Priest. She turns into a demonic serpent who wraps her body around the temple bell consuming it and the priest in the process.
