Large red varsity letter P for Packwood High School in Packwood, IA, from the late 1950’s. The patch has a musical emblem, or lyre indicating the recipient was in the band or orchestra. The two horizontal bars indicate the number of years of participation. The varsity letter was meant to be sewn onto a jacket or a bag.
This is an original without any alterations as it belonged to my mother. Original varsity letters were made from chenille which is soft and fuzzy and had a felt-like border. The musical emblem and bars are embroidered. The letter is red but almost looks orange in some lighting. Approximately 6 3/4” tall and 6” wide.
It doesn’t look like this letter was ever sewn onto anything. The top left corner and bottom right of the P have been bent backwards at one time while stored. See two photos. All stitching is intact except for a snag on the left side of the P about halfway down next to the edge. I don’t see any pilling, see photos. The photo of the back of this varsity letter shows all stitching intact. There’s approximately a dozen blackish pinpoint areas on the back but they don’t affect the front.
Perfect for any home decor DIY project. Think about the High School Theater closet, Community Placehouse or a college theater company. How about a blast from the past used in a Halloween costume.
I will be happy to answer any questions.
