The Book of Garden Flowers - 1954

I admit it, I have an undeniable affection for vintage flower books -- the illustrations are always so lovely. "The object of this book is to provide an easy medium for the choice and identification of certain garden plants. Only those that may be admitted to the mixed flower border have been included. This has necessitated the inclusion of the more familiar favourites, and, in addition, some of the lesser known but equally deserving genera have been described...." - The Book of Garden Flowers: a Descriptive Guide to Both Annuals and Perennials of which 320 Varieties are Illustrated in Colour - G.A.R. Phillips. With 80 Plates in Colour by Joan Lupton. Printed 1954, Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd. London Hardcover. Approx. 5x6.5in. 240pp. Spine is a bit sun-faded. Has an ex-libris print on the front endpaper -- and interestingly, as a bit of a Canadiana tangent, we see from the coat of arms that the book came from the library of Vincent Massey, who became the 18th Governor General of Canada. We can also deduce that he acquired the book prior to his stint as the G.G. as the coat of arms does not feature the 'canton charged with the crest of the Royal Arms of Canada' that was added by the Queen to honour his service as the Governor General. The motto, 'Dum Terar Prosum', is a Latin phrase meaning "As long as I am wearing myself out, I am useful" Book is in otherwise good vintage condition.
