This unique piece is an antique victorian mourning pin or broach featuring a buckle with chain which dates to the mid to late 1800’s. This hand-carved pin is made of gutta percha wood and glass beads and is in excellent condition for it's age. The pin measures 3 1/4” by 1 3/8” by 1/2” and has an antique ‘C’ clasp closure.
My research indicates that this pin was made for wear by members of The Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The following information is word-of-mouth and there is no absolute documentation or proof. The deceased "brother" in memoranium of whom the pin was worn was reportedly a high-ranking member of the organization and was also a Veteran Union Soldier from the American Civil War.
The pin tells of belief in rebirth and the representation of clasping another’s hand in a forever lasting grip. As far as I can tell, the only item that may be missing is a lock of the deceased's hair, which would have been attached to the beads or clasp in some manner.
This item is prefect for collectors of Antique Jewelry / Victorian Era Jewelry / Mourning Jewelry / Civil War Era Jewelry / Military Memorabilia / Odd Fellows Memorabilia / Fraternal Order Memorabilia / Civil War Memorabilia / Union Soldier Memorabilia / Veteran's Items / Haunted Jewelry / Haunted Items
