In great condition, no stains/tears/holes or other damage. A popular collector’s item amongst nurses. I would’ve loved to wear this, but it’s a bit too small for me in the neck and shoulders. It appears to be of great quality and I suspect it will hold up well for a long time.
SIZE NOTE: There is no size given on the garment; I am estimating it to be a small or XS, possibly petite sizing. Please refer to the measurements below, happy to provide more if requested.
Measurements:
Neck (circumference) - 15in
Width (at shoulders) - 16in
Length (shoulder to bottom) - 31in
Description: Navy blue wool exterior with red wool lining. Stand-up collar with "C.H." and “S.N.” in gold embroidered block letters. Hook and eye closure at collar. Four large brass buttons held closed with two navy blue wool tabs with button holes at each end. Additional navy blue plastic buttons on interior. Interior pocket. Metal chain hanger sewn on inside, near collar.
History: From the bit of research I’ve done, this was likely produced for a nurse graduating from Concord Hospital in New Hampshire (CH for Concord Hospital, SN for School of Nursing). The New Hampshire historical society has a very similar cape on record.
Script letters are not my strong suit, but I suspect the initials embroidered on the inner label are “G. F. S.” The middle initial could also be an I, J, or T. These likely represent the initials of the person this belonged to.
