A hatpin holder was a common lady's dresser item in the late 19th century, and was meant to store the very long, very large hatpins used for fastening the enormous headgear fashionable at the time.
This example is unmarked, but is undoubtedly c.1895, and Japanese in origin; and is decorated with hand-painted floral designs and gilding, and trimmed with very deep blue in the style commonly referred to as 'Royal Nippon'. The holder is about 4 inches tall and 2 1/4 inches across the base, and it is in excellent condition, without cracks, chips, stains, wear, or other damage or defect.
