Antique vintage 1940s glass insulators, set of 4. Collectible.
Insulators are non-electrical conducting objects, usually made of glass or porcelain, intended to insulate the current running in a wire from grounding out, especially in fog or rain. Most often they are mounted on wooden pins on the cross arms of telephone poles.
The standard format is generally "MADE IN U.S.A." on the rear skirt. This format was "MM-YY" such as 30-41. The first number (MM) is the mold number, and the second number (YY) is the year (plus 1900) when the mold was made. Thus, "30-41" is mold 30, which was made in 1941.
The heyday of insulators is considered to be the period between 1875-1930. There were many producers of insulators, the most prolific being Hemingray. Clear and aqua blue are the most common colors of insulators.
*The 2 small insulators are marked DOMINION-9 81 with the DOMINION stamp and a 6 underneath.
*One of the large insulators is marked WHITALL TATUM No.1 MADE IN U.S.A. 29-42 with an A in a circle and 41 under the stamp.
*One of the large insulators is marked HEMINGRAY-45 MADE IN U.S.A. 30-41
Great vintage condition. There is one very small chip on the bottom rim of the Hemingray and light scratches on the Whitall Tatum (see photos).
Please remember when purchasing vintage items that they have a history attached to them and often show wear, which I do my very best to disclose.
