A Diary Between Friends" is a documentary film directed by Judy Jackson, released in 2002. The 55-minute documentary showcases the kindness and hospitality of Canadians towards American air travelers who were stranded in Canada due to the September 11, 2001, attacks. Narrated by Gordon Pinsent, the film highlights the spontaneous acts of friendship and support offered to these travelers during a difficult time.
Flights diverted in Canada on 9/11 were redirected to several Canadian Forces bases and civilian airports across the country. Some of the known locations include :
• Gander, Newfoundland: 38 flights and nearly 6,600 passengers were diverted to 9 Wing Gander, where residents provided significant support, including food, bedding, and shelter.
• Winnipeg, Manitoba: 17 flights were diverted to 17 Wing Winnipeg, with 1,500 travelers arriving. The community mobilized quickly to provide support.
• Other locations: A total of 240 planes carrying thousands of passengers were diverted to 17 different civilian airports across Canada as part of Operation Yellow Ribbon.
